Beach Bum
McNeil River Bear Sanctuary, Alaska
In the Alaskan National Parks and the McNeil River Bear Sanctuary, bears are allowed to live their lives freely as they have for thousands of years. The landscapes are spectacular and stretch for miles without evidence of human interference. Bears are sustained by the summer salmon run which provide abundant protein. They emerge from hibernation in the spring and begin to gather in areas where the salmon first appear and other food sources are available. As the summer days grow long and warm, a walk in the cool ocean followed by a satisfying scratch on a driftwood log make for this classic and somewhat humorous scene of a coastal brown bear.
