Daydreamer
McNeil River, Alaska
After emerging from their winter dens, coastal Alaskan brown bears head toward the river estuaries and await the first salmon runs of the summer. The early-season sedge grasses are surprisingly rich in protein and sustain the bears until the fish arrive. The bears congregate in the sedge flats as they feed and socialize. These animals are amazingly curious and observant. This bear is actually watching a bald eagle soar overhead in this protected eden known as McNeil River. The gentle gaze of this beautiful animal makes me wonder about its thoughts and dreams.
