Orca Mist

Orca Mist

Johnstone Strait, British Columbia

Resident orcas thrive on salmon.  As these fish gather in coastal waters and prepare to travel up river to spawn, the orcas congregate for a summer feast.  Orcas are highly social and intelligent animals.  With lifespans similar to humans, they remain in their family groups for life.  This male orca with a dorsal fin over 6 feet tall travels close to the rocky shoreline.  The setting sun illuminates the mist from his exhale as he gracefully breaks the surface of the water.
