Rhododendrons and redwoods both thrive in the moist coastal climates of the Pacific Northwest.  The rhododendron blooms do not occur every year; this was simply an amazing year.  The redwoods depend on the coastal fog for summer water.  These magnificent trees provide the canopy shade required for the plants of the forest floor to flourish.
