The Fishing Hole
Katmai National Park, Alaska
The brown bears of Alaska rely on the summer salmon runs for food. Toward the end of the runs in early October, the bears still search for fish that will nourish them through their winter hibernation. Bears often have individual fishing styles. Some bear dive and search, others run and pounce, and some just sit patiently and wait for just the right moment. This young bear (maybe 3-5 years old) returned to this spot several times each day during my stay. Sitting in adorable positions, this bear would wait for just the right moment before jumping in the water to grab a passing salmon.
