The Sheriff
Banff National Park, Alberta
The autumn elk rut is one of nature's most amazing spectacles. Large bull elk, fit from a bountiful summer in the Rockies, compete with each other for herd dominance. Their massive antlers are actually shed during winter and re-grown each year with peak growth rates of one inch per day in the summer. Their iconic bugle echoes through the mountains as they announce their presence to other males. Affectionately known as the Sheriff, the unusually large bull is a 7x9 (the numbers refer to the number of points on each side of his antlers). He is the largest bull I have ever seen and a great example of how large these animals can become when their gene pool is allowed to naturally mature.
